The traditional ceremony, organised by the sector for war veterans welfare of the Serbian Ministry of Labour and Social Policy in cooperation with the Defence Ministry, is one of its kind in the country and is held every year on July 14, when in 1930 the Memorial of Gratitude to France was unveiled.
Representatives of the Serbian Army, Belgrade City and the French embassy in Belgrade, as well as NGOs dedicated to cherishing the tradition of Serbian wars of freedom attended the ceremony.
French Ambassador to Serbia Jean-François Terral laid a wreath and said addressing the press that Serbia and France share a long history and expressed the hope that Serbia will become a member of the EU as soon as possible.
The memorial was sculpted by Ivan Mestrovic, and signifies the friendship, mutual support and cooperation between Serbia and France during the First World War.
