Jovan Nedeljkovic, Uranija Kozmidis-Luburic and President of the Regulatory commission for nuclear and radiation safety Istvan Bikit
Kozmidis-Luburic told a press conference that Serbia is relatively safe when it comes to nuclear safety, therefore there are no reasons for panic.
She said she hopes that thanks to the realisation of new projects, Serbia will remain a safe environment and added that it is still early to speak about the degree of nuclear safety for 2010 and beyond.
According to her, there are around 8,000 fuel units of radioactive elements in two storage facilities of the Vinca Nuclear Institute which are to be transferred to Russia by 2010.
Kozmidis-Luburic explained that the two facilities are neither safe enough, nor built in line with European standards, and announced that a third storage facility will soon be completed in which radioactive material will be more safely stored.
She also warned that radioactive waste is being kept in open pools and that it is inadequately stored.
Director of the Vinca Institute Jovan Nedeljkovic explained that the concrete walls of the pools are about 80 cm thick and lined with steel panels, therefore there is no leakage into the ground.
