In an interview for today’s edition of the daily Vecernje Novosti, Jeremic stressed that Serbia has nothing against the EU’s participation as an international civilian presence in the province, and that it even believes that the EU should play an important role.
In order to give a proper legal framework to that engagement, a decision by the Security Council is necessary since only the Council has the mandate to alter the composition of the international civilian presence, regulated by Resolution 1244, he explained.
According to him, Serbia is ready to talk and cooperate with all interested participants in the process, but the outcome will in any case have to be confirmed at the Security Council.
He said Serbia can talk about all modalities for solving the issue of the EU mission in the province but only until Serbia’s red lines are touched, and these are the preservation of sovereignty and territorial integrity and proper protection of the non-Albanian population in the province.
The caretaker government cannot propose new initiatives on this matter but can only continue with the policy which was in place until the government changed its status to a caretaker one.
Information which Serbia possesses shows that there is increased pressure on some states to recognise the illegally proclaimed independence of the Serbian province.
Our work so far has been relatively successful. We managed to limit the number of countries which recognised Kosovo and prevent the province from entering international organisations, which naturally causes counter-reactions, but we will continue to do everything within our power, said the Minister.
