Speaking at a press conference, held following a seminar on accreditation in food quality and safety systems at the international agricultural fair in Novi Sad, Krnjaic said that only by respecting European standards, the public, market and importers can be certain about the safety and quality of products.
Considering the fact that Serbia expects to earn more than $2 million from imports of agricultural products this year, it is clear how important it is to join the European co-operation for Accreditation (EA), said Krnjaic.
Serbian Assistant Minister of Economy and Regional Development, Branislava Jaksic stressed the importance of establishing partnership with foreign organisations for accreditation, since it will guarantee that Serbian products meet international standards.
Jaksic said that the Ministry of Economy and Regional Development and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management are offering full support in the process of adapting Serbian standards to European ones and for joining the EA.
EA Chairman Lorenzo Thione said that Serbia would gain several advantages by signing a multilateral agreement with the EA, since the agreement allows products and services to be marketed in European countries.
Thione explained that the task of the EA is to get international recognition and approval for reports, analyses and certificates from one country signatory to the agreement in all other member countries.
The Accreditation Body of Serbia already has a role in the system of accreditation which will strengthen as the country makes progress in European integration, and will realise its full role when Serbia becomes an EU member, said Thione.
