Victory of Europe Day observed in Serbia

Belgrade, 10 May 2008

The day of victory over fascism in World War II, known as Victory of Europe Day, was observed last night with a celebration and concert of the Belgrade philharmonic, under the baton of Saulius Sondecki, held at the great hall of Zaduzbina Ilije Kolarca in Belgrade.

Serbian Minister of Culture Vojislav Brajovic, as envoy of the President of Serbia, said that he is very happy that, on the Day of victory over fascism, he can greet those who participated in the war of national liberation and who witnessed the war’s atrocities.

I want to pay respects to those who fought for freedom and those who gave their lives so that others could live in freedom, the minister of culture said.

The concert and the series of events dedicated to the Victory of Europe Day was organised by the Serbian Ministry of Labour and Social Policy in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Serbian Committee of the Association of Fighters of the National Liberation War.
