Speaking at a press conference held at the Institute for Dermatovenerology of the Clinical Centre of Serbia, held on the occasion of May 5 – Euro-Melanoma Day, he said that a national document for the fight against non-contagious diseases will be adopted on May 7.
He said that some 3,500 people in Serbia get skin cancer every year, of whom several hundred get melanoma. Of that number, a quarter dies.
The minister explained that melanoma is an insidious disease because it spreads quickly, and that data shows there is an equal number of melanoma patients and those with colon cancer, which is among the most frequent.
Milosavljevic said that it is important to diagnose the tumor in its early stages, and stressed that it is necessary to better inform and raise the awareness of the public concerning the significance of health care.
According to Milosavljevic, one of the most significant causes of melanoma is excessive and direct exposure to sunlight, and one prevention method is to avoid sun tanning from 12 to 4 pm, and using protection creams with a sun protection factor higher than 20.
Euro-Melanoma Day is marked every year on the first Monday of the month of May in more than 20 countries, and in Serbia 20 state dermatological institutions and seven private clinics are taking part in the campaign.
