Speaking at a press conference regarding the take over, transport and storage of Radium-226 to the Vinca Institute and the design of a programme for the disposal of radioactive waste in Serbia, Kozmidis-Luburic said that if no technical obstacles arise, then during the next 60 to 90 days the committee will choose a suitable site for waste disposal.
According to our projections the permanent waste disposal site should be ready by 2010, explained the State Secretary and specified that 26 locations in three different regions of Serbia are under consideration.
She said that the radioactive waste is currently at the Vinca Institute, but pointed to the fact that this is not a proper solution and the waste will remain there until an appropriate disposal site is found.
Kozmidis-Luburic recalled that radioactive waste Radium-226 was transported to Vinca from the Dragomir Karajovic Institute of Occupational Health and from NIS Naftagas in Novi Sad.
According to her, this is the most important task carried out recently as Radium 226 is one of strongest sources of radioactivity, and it was transferred from the centre of Belgrade.
She said that this task was carried out with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which paid €60,000 to Hungarian company Izotop to transport the waste. The action was coordinated with the Ministry of Science and Ministry of Environmental Protection.
