Speaking at a press conference, Stefanovic said that the signing of the memorandum will enable Serbia for the first time to participate in the EU’s culture contests that are open to countries which are candidates for EU membership.
She said that the EU’s Culture Programme (2007–2013) has a budget of €400 million, and added that the memorandum will be signed by Serbian Minister of Culture Vojislav Brajovic and herself.
The Culture Programme was established by the Decision of the European Parliament and of the Council December 12, 2006 and represents a financial instrument for cultural projects from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2013, recalled Stefanovic.
According to Stefanovic, the Culture Programme aims to strengthen cultural identity, promote cultural cooperation between European countries, encourage the transnational circulation of cultural and artistic works and foster intercultural dialogue.
She said that as part of the programme competitions are held on an annual basis for funding projects in music, protection of cultural heritage, literature etc.
Stefanovic stressed that cultural institutions as well as NGOs are qualified to compete for funds.
She said that one of the key words in the programme is partnership and specified that competing projects must be based on partnership with one of the EU countries.
