Initiative to declare 2008 year of fight against sports violence

Serbian Minister of Youth and Sports Snezana Samardzic-Markovic said today that her ministry forwarded an initiative to the government to declare 2008 the year against violence in sports.

Speaking at a press conference, Samardzic-Markovic presented results of the ministry’s work in 2007, and said that main goals for 2008 are adoption of a national youth strategy, a strategy for development of sports and the law on sports.
She expressed expectation that next year Serbia will not be the only country in the region without a youth strategy, and will also get a strategy for development of sports. She added that investing into sports facilities is of major importance for development of sports in Serbia.
According to Samardzic-Markovic, during the first quarter of the upcoming year a new, modern law on sports should be adopted which is currently in parliamentary procedure.
She said that 2007 was a successful year regarding sports in Serbia, but also concerning that what the ministry has done in a short period of time for youth.
She expressed regret however over the fact that more funds were not allocated for the youth, and voiced hope that this will be put right next year.
According to Samardzic-Markovic, next year will be crucial for her ministry since it is an Olympic year.
