In an interview to Evropa weekly, Jeremic voiced hope that Serbia will sign the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU, and that 2008 will be the period when the next step in the process of EU integration will be made, and that is obtaining the EU candidate status.
He expressed belief that 2008 will be of crucial importance for the region because it will be seen if we will use the fact that the EU is currently open to further enlargement.
Our great task is to use that sentiment and obtain the EU candidate status. After that, no one will be able to question whether Serbia should be allowed to enter the EU or not, and everything will depend on our own speed and ability to fulfil the Copenhagen criteria for the EU membership.
He said that the government is unified on the issues of security and defence policy, in the sense that everyone agrees that we should use all advantages of our membership in the Partnership for Peace and thus strengthen our Euro-Atlantic perspective in next few years.
