Perisic said at a joint press conference with Serbian Minister of Culture Vojislav Brajovic that it is necessary to adopt a law on archives services that will regulate archives management, as well as the law on dossiers.
He said that the Archives of Serbia have the obligation to submit to the courts photocopies of the documents needed for conducting rehabilitation trials, but that the existing technical conditions make that difficult.
Perisic specified that the Archives of Serbia have so far received 610 requests for such documents and explained that there is no agreement with the Military Security Agency to take over its archival materials, which would be very good for the entire society since that materials are of exceptional value.
Commenting on the issue discussed in the international community as to where the documentation of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) should be kept, he said that it would be best that an archives office is created in The Hague, which would serve to historians.
Perisic called upon Serbian state organs to consult the archives in examining this issue.
Serbian Minister of Culture Vojislav Brajovic said that the Archives of Serbia is one of the most important national institutions. This institution began taking over archives from BIA in 2004, and took over 46,502 dossiers on citizens.
He added that apart from dossiers the Archives of Serbia took over from BIA more than 300,000 pages of various documents, and is now discussing with the Serbian Orthodox Church taking over its archives.
The Minster said that preparation of the draft law on archives is underway and that the bill will be ready by the end of this year.
