In an interview for the news agency Tanjug, Samardzic expressed expectation that the UN Security Council will decide to begin a new phase of negotiations and pointed to the fact that Europe is deeply divided upon the Kosovo status issue, and there has been no shift in stands during 120 days.
He explained that when the current phase of negotiations being mediated by the international troika of envoys ends, the US, Russia and EU will have to assess the situation and draw fresh conclusions.
They will have to reach agreement regarding further steps, and there are equal chances of a rational approach to the problem as well as sudden decisions, said the Minister, who is leading the operative part of the state negotiating team.
Speaking on an irrational outcome, Samardzic stressed that it is possible that the province is declared to be independent, which could lead us into a difficult period of uncertainty. He warned that Serbia must be ready to react on many different levels.
We are conducting activities on the assumption that a compromise will be found, but we must be ready to react adequately in case a solution is imposed, regarding those who decide in favour of such an option, and concerning Kosovo-Metohija as well where consequences of such an outcome would be exceedingly negative, he stressed.
Samardzic expressed his conviction that this will not happen since influential EU countries are concerned over a unilateral declaration of independence for Kosovo-Metohija, and are not indifferent to the situation into which Serbia will be forced if such a unilateral declaration were to be recognised by any side.
