Speaking at a press conference held on the occasion of the World Diabetes Day, Milosavljevic said that diabetes is a chronic disease which, together with heart disease, malignancy and lung disease, is responsible for almost half of the deaths worldwide.
According to Milosavljevic, currently 246 million people in the world are diabetic, and it is estimated that until 2025, this number will increase to 380 million.
The Minister pointed to the fact that every year an additional seven million people become diabetic, and 3.8 million deaths occur annually due to this disease.
President of the Serbian Expert Commission for Diabetes Nebojsa Lalic said that prevention of complications in diabetes, and the disease itself, is an important task for this commission.
Lalic said that diabetes is the most common cause of blindness, kidney diseases and problems with nerves, while in the case of heart attacks, two thirds of the patients have abnormal sugar levels.
Director of the Serbian Health Insurance Institute Svetlana Vukajlovic stressed that this institute fully finances modern therapy for all those suffering from diabetes.
