Speaking to the press, Brajovic said that Serbia as a young and independent state is trying to consistently and actively implement the principles of UNESCO.
He said that UNESCO is very active in protection of cultural heritage in Kosovo-Metohija, and recalled that this organisation provided significant funding for education, science and the restoration of Serbian cultural heritage sites.
The Minister noted that the Serbian Office for Protection of Monuments is also involved in this process and also announced the signing of UNESCO’s conventions on cultural cooperation, diversity of cultural expressions and underwater cultural heritage.
Thanks to Serbian Ambassador to UNESCO Dragoljub Najman and with great support of UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura, Serbian medieval monuments of Studenica, Stari Ras, Sopocani, Gracanica, Decani, Bogorodica Ljeviska and Gamzigrad were included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Under the auspices of UNESCO, a donor conference for reconstruction of cultural heritage in Kosovo and destroyed monasteries and churches in the March 2004 pogrom was organised in 2005.
