Ljajic told the press following the conference “Childhood without Violence” that participants of the conference concluded that there can be no tolerance for people who perpetrate physical, sexual or any other form of violence against children.
He stressed that the Serbian government has taken several steps to control violence against children, and a wide legal base has been created to protect children and prevent violence against them, but he warned that this is not enough.
The Minister, who is president of the Serbian government’s Council for Children’s Rights, said that by the end of the year a law will be adopted on a children’s ombudsman. He recalled that there is a plan underway for prevention of child abuse, and that criminal law was amended to define child abuse as a criminal act.
Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE) Maud De Boer-Buquicchio stressed that the CoE wants that every member country adopts a national strategy which will help reduce violence against children.
She stressed that major progress was made in Serbia, in legislation and in initiatives from civil society.
The conference which was organised by the Serbian Ministry of Labour and Social Policy and the Council for Children’s Rights, gathered nearly 120 experts from all neighbouring countries, and exchanged experience regarding the protection of children.
