Wreaths were laid by representatives of the City of Belgrade and the French Embassy to commemorate tens of thousands French soldiers fallen in the First World War.
The First World War resulted in a huge loss of life and material damage, and Serbia in that war paid an enormous sacrifice of human lives, much larger than any other country in Europe.
Owing to traditionally friendly relations France offered valuable help to Serbia during the First World War. That help consisted of weapons and ammunition, sending units to the Balkan Front, as well as medical help for thousands of Serbian wounded in military hospitals in France, Algeria and Tunisia.
