The donation is part of the Japanese programme for providing non-repayable assistance for culture and it is intended for securing new audio-visual equipment, which will replace the outdated equipment.
According to the agreement digital video cameras and video recorders, colour LCD equipment, an active sound system and other digital equipment will be procured for the theatre.
Cvetkovic recalled that the Japanese government is one of the major donators to Serbia and allocated a sum of €2.1 million for the sphere of culture, which was used to purchase equipment for the Faculty of Dramatic Arts, instruments for the philharmonic orchestra and light and sound equipment for the Serbian National Theatre in Novi Sad.
The Minister expressed gratitude for the new donation and said that he hopes that cooperation between the two countries and help by the Japanese government will continue.
Ambassador Nagai said that it is important to help cultural institutions as they are an important segment of society, and stressed that it pleases him that the funds will be invested in the modernisation of one of the most prestigious and oldest cultural institutions of Serbia.
As a big fan of classical music and opera I expect that the new equipment will contribute to improving the quality of performances which are even now extraordinarily good. The Japanese delegation which is visiting to asses the requirements of the National Theatre was very impressed by the fact that the old equipment is very well kept and how successfully it is put to use, said Nagai.
Serbian Minister of Culture Vojislav Brajovic expressed gratitude for the generous donation by the Japanese, and explained that cultural activities will be improved with the new equipment.
Brajovic recalled that this is the first time the National Theatre will renew its equipment since its reconstruction in 1989, when equipment was received from Japan.
