Serbian Minister of Health Tomica Milosavljevic said that Ambassador of Serbia-Montenegro permanent mission to the United Nations Nebojsa Kaludjerovic signed the World Health Organisation's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control on June 28.
Milosavljevic told a press conference that the Convention is the first international document on public health and a sign of commitment of all countries in the world to engage in the fight against the epidemic of use of tobacco products. This epidemic led to the increase in the number of those ill with chronical non-contagious diseases, which take 4.2 million lives every year. The estimates say that the number will rise to 10 million by 2025.
The Minister said that 23 countries has signed the Convention so far. It will enter into force on the ninetieth day following the date of deposit of the fortieth instrument of ratification. The deadline for ratification is not limited.
Milosavljevic said that he sent an official letter to the Serbia-Montenegrin Minister of Foreign Affairs, asking him to launch the procedure for the convention's ratification in the Serbia-Montenegrin parliament.
