According to a statement by the Museum, jadarite will be on display in the Gallery of the Natural History Museum in Mali Kalemegdan from May 9 to 16.
The mineral was scientifically recognised by the International Mineralogical Association, and the sample which is on display in the Museum in Belgrade falls in the rare category of holotype, which is the single specimen designated as the type for naming a species or subspecies or used as the basis for naming a species or subspecies, reads the statement.
Jadarite has recently become part of the rich mineral collection of the Natural History Museum and was obtained from London Natural History Museum expert Dr Chris Stanley.
Jadarite was discovered last year in the Jadar region near Loznica, and was put on display for the first time in the London Museum on April 25 2007, and according to its chemical formula – LiNaSiB3O7 (OH) (sodium-lithium-boron-silicate-hydroxide), it is very similar to the fictional mineral kryptonite, the only effective weapon against Superman, the comic book hero.
