Speaking at a press conference held at the Hyatt Regency hotel he stated that some 500 competitors from 43 countries have applied for the competition, and the final number of participants, who will have the opportunity to enter the qualifications for the Olympic Games to be held in Beijing in 2008, will be known on March 26, when the deadline for application of participants expires.
He said that the organisation of a championship one year before the Olympic Games is a privilege. He outlined that out of the total number of medals won in this sport at the Olympic Games in Athens, 70% went to sportsmen from Europe, which clearly shows that the base of judo is currently on the old continent.
Director of the Sports Directorate of the Serbian Ministry of Education and Sport Aleksandar Sostar said that every big sporting event in Serbia attracts great attention and is an excellent opportunity to show Europe and the world Serbia's real face.
Director of the Championship Dragan Atanasov said that representatives of the European Judo Federation made their final inspection yesterday and ranked Serbia's organisers with the highest grade for the work done.
According to them, Belgrade fulfills conditions for applying for the organisation of the world championship, which is one more confirmation of the quality of the Serbian organisational teams.
