Zoran Loncar at today's press conference
Loncar said in a press conference held after the government session today that the Ministry of Interior formally took over control of the border following the decision of the Supreme Council of Defence.
He said that the total border currently secured by police forces spans 2,100 kilometres and includes the border with six countries, namely Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria and Macedonia.
This job has been done in less than two years, stressed Loncar and added it took much more time – three to five years – for other countries to end the process.
According to him, this creates conditions for undeterred flow of people, goods and capital and also establishes mechanisms necessary for the prevention of organised and cross-border crime.
Border demilitarisation is also necessary for visa relaxations, Loncar added.
He recalled that the present cabinet cannot establish state policy but is only performing current and technical affairs necessary for the functioning of the state.
This government must respect citizens’ electoral will, and since January 21 elections the present make-up is not what citizens voted in the elections. Therefore, this cabinet can now perform only necessary task until the new government is set up, Loncar concluded.
