Simic said at a press conference held on the occasion of presentation of results of a public health survey conducted in Serbia in 2006, that preliminary results have shown that high blood pressure, which is also caused by hard living conditions and the wrong diet, is most frequent in the population between 35 and 54 years of age.
She said that there is a progress in relation to the previous survey conducted in 2000, because smoking fell by 5%, while knowledge of HIV prevention increased.
In relation to 2000, the percentage of obese population increased, mostly because of higher obesity among adolescents who also consume more alcohol than before.
The survey was conducted by the Ministry of Health with financial support from the World Bank, the World Health Organisation and in association with the Serbian Public Health Institute and Strategic Marketing research agency.
The survey was conducted in 6,150 homes by the method of random choice, and the respondents were adults as well as youths between the ages of 7 and 19.
The final results, which will be published in April 2007, will be used for a comparative analysis in relation to research conducted in 2000, for the evaluation of activities of the Ministry of Health on preservation and improvement of health of Serbian population, and for planning future measures and activities.
