Speaking at a press conference occasioned by the marking of the World COPD Day, November 15, Simic said that this strategy will most likely be presented at the regional conference of the World Health Organisation that will be held in September 2007 in Belgrade.
She said that following coronary diseases, cerebrovascular diseases and acute respiratory infections, COPD and AIDS are the fourth most common cause of death.
According to Simic, smoking is the most important individual risk factor for the appearance of COPD, and quitting smoking is the first step in the treatment of the disease.
President of the Association for COPD and asthma of the Institute for Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis of the Serbian Clinical Centre Vesna Bosnjak-Petrovic said that it is important that all persons older than 40 who have been smoking for over 20 years should take a COPD test. However, it is necessary that all community health centres be equipped with spirometers.
