Prime Minister in a caretaker capacity Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, held talks today with representatives of state universities in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Niš, Novi Pazar and Priština, as well as the University of Arts in Belgrade, on their standing in international rankings and opportunities to enhance the quality and international visibility of Serbian higher education.

Macut emphasised that performance in international rankings should not be viewed solely in terms of current placement, but rather as the outcome of years of work and achievements.
He said that placement in international rankings is based on a large number of indicators, which is why it is important to analyse them carefully, stressing that maintaining the continuity of teaching and scientific research is particularly important, because without it there can be no continuity in results.
According to him, this outcome should prompt a serious professional analysis, given that the consequences of any disruption to work are not always immediately apparent, whereas international rankings value outcomes resulting from long-term effort.
The Prime Minister highlighted the interconnectedness of teaching and scientific research, noting that a setback in one area inevitably impacts the other.
He said that the consequences of such a setback could impact scientific output and other indicators considered in international rankings.
Macut stressed that the state remains committed to creating conditions for the stable and uninterrupted operation of higher education institutions, while the responsibility for ensuring the delivery of teaching, as well as scientific research and professional activities, lies with the universities themselves and their leadership.
