Contract for design, construction works on Belgrade Metro Line 1 signed

Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure in a caretaker capacity Aleksandra Sofronijević together with representatives of the public utility company Belgrade Metro and Train, the Belgrade City Secretariat for Public Transport, and the Chinese company PowerChina signed a contract today for the design and construction of Lot 3 of the first phase of Belgrade Metro Line 1.

Sofronijević emphasised that today marks another major step toward final implementation of a decades-long aspiration of all citizens given that the construction of the metro will provide Serbia’s capital city with a modern, efficient public transport system that connects various parts of Belgrade, relieves pressure on existing transport infrastructure, and creates conditions for the further development and modernisation of public transport.

The Minister stated that the signing of the contract for Lot 3 effectively completes the first phase of Belgrade Metro Line 1, which will span 15.4 kilometers.

Sofronijević recalled that, over the past three years, the Republic of Serbia has signed several significant contracts with PowerChina regarding Lots 1 and 2, and highlighted that the TBM machines, known as "moles", which were manufactured and factory-tested in China, are already en route to Serbia.

The contract was signed at the Serbian government by Slaven Andrić on behalf of the Secretariat for Public Transport, Andreja Mladenović on behalf of Belgrade Metro and Train, and on behalf of PowerChina by the company's Vice President for Eurasian Operations Yang Fan.
