Continued UNMIK engagement crucial for stability in Kosovo and Metohija

Belgrade/New York, 21 October 2026

Minister of Foreign Affairs in a caretaker capacity Marko Đurić met with President of the United Nations Security Council and Permanent Representative of Greece to the UN Aglaia Balta ahead of a Security Council session dedicated to the work of UNMIK.

Đurić noted that the regular consideration of the issue of Kosovo and Metohija within the UN Security Council is essential for an objective and comprehensive assessment of the political and security situation on the ground, as well as for ensuring that the international community remains focused on the numerous challenges faced by the Serb population in the province.

He pointed to the continuous deterioration of the position of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, stressing in particular that unilateral actions by Priština – such as the closure of Serbian institutions and the obstruction of access to basic public services – further deepen an atmosphere of insecurity and distrust.

The Minister drew particular attention to the pressures faced by Serbs in the north of Kosovo and Metohija, as well as the need to ensure their personal and property security, freedom of movement, and the unimpeded exercise of their fundamental human rights.

Đurić emphasised the necessity of consistently implementing all obligations undertaken within the framework of the Belgrade-Priština dialogue, including the establishment of the Community of Serb Municipalities – an important mechanism for protecting the collective and individual rights of the Serbian people.
