Đurić’s bilateral meetings as part of commemoration of 65 years of NAM

Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić met today, as part of a high-level commemorative meeting to mark the 65th anniversary of the First Conference of Heads of State or Government of the Non-Aligned Countries, with Minister of Parliamentary and Minority Affairs of the Republic of India Kiren Rijiju.

The interlocutors referred to the traditional friendship between the two countries and the visit of Indian President Droupadi Murmu to Belgrade in 2023, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations.

Đurić underlined that this visit was the first visit of the Indian President to Belgrade in half a century, assessing that this gave a new impetus to political dialogue at all levels.

The Serbian Foreign Minister expressed his gratitude for India’s support in preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia, as well as for its support in international organisations.

Pointing out that ties between Serbia and India are also developing in the field of the economy, the Minister emphasised that there is great potential for cooperation in the area of artificial intelligence and digital technologies.

He also expressed particular satisfaction that India will present its rich cultural heritage and economic potential at Specialised Expo 2027 in Belgrade.

During the talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Mali Abdoulaye Diop, Đurić emphasised that the two countries have enjoyed decades of good relations, bearing in mind that Serbia has continued the Yugoslav policy towards African countries, with which it wishes to strengthen political, economic, educational and cultural ties.

He expressed his gratitude to Mali for its principled support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia.

At the same time, the Minister pointed to the strengthening of political dialogue at all levels, as well as the importance of economic cooperation, through which comprehensive relations between the two countries can be improved.

The meeting also looked at the cooperation in the fields of agriculture and education, which is already being successfully implemented through the “World in Serbia” scholarship project for foreign students.

The head of Serbian diplomacy also emphasised that in Serbia, 1 September is celebrated as the Day of the Non-Aligned, in memory of Belgrade’s historic role in the founding of the Non-Aligned Movement and reaffirming the country’s commitment to a policy of peace, cooperation and equality among nations.

Đurić conveyed to Diop, who is leading the Malian delegation at the commemorative meeting marking the 65th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement, his satisfaction that this African country will present its potential, culture and vision at the prestigious international exhibition Expo 2027 in Belgrade.

He also met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Republic of Tanzania Mahmoud Thabit Kombo.

At the meeting, the head of Serbian diplomacy stressed that Serbia is committed to revitalising and strengthening relations with all African countries, with particular importance attached to enhancing cooperation with Tanzania.

Informing his interlocutor about the difficult position of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija, Đurić reiterated that Serbia remains committed to respecting international law and the territorial integrity and sovereignty of independent states.

The Minister expressed satisfaction with Tanzania’s confirmed participation in Specialised Expo 2027, as well as his conviction that the African country would be presented in the best possible light during the event.

As regards economic cooperation, it was noted that there is an interest in strengthening it and that agriculture, the food industry, tourism and education are areas of mutual interest with the greatest potential for progress.

The meeting also expressed satisfaction with the opening of the Embassy of Serbia in Tanzania, which was assessed as an important step towards establishing a broader partnership.

During his meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Burundi Édouard Bizimana, who is leading his country’s delegation at the gathering in Belgrade, Đurić reiterated that Serbia remains committed to developing relations with countries across the African continent.

The Minister stressed that Serbia and Burundi are bound by traditional friendship, based on the principles of solidarity, mutual understanding and support.

He pointed out that dynamic political dialogue provides a good basis for strengthening bilateral ties and expressed particular satisfaction with last year’s visit by President of Burundi Évariste Ndayishimiye to Belgrade.

According to him, regular political consultations between the two foreign ministries have also contributed to closer ties and better mutual understanding.

The head of Serbian diplomacy conveyed his gratitude to Burundi for its support for Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, stressing that Kosovo and Metohija is an issue of the greatest national and state importance for Serbia.

The talks confirmed that there is significant potential for strengthening economic cooperation and further improving relations, while Đurić also highlighted the fields of agriculture, digital transformation and IT infrastructure, as well as education through the World in Serbia project.

He expressed satisfaction that Burundi had recognised the importance of the theme and the quality of the concept Serbia had put forward for Specialised Expo 2027 and that it would participate in this prestigious event in Belgrade.
