Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, stated today in the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, responding to a question from a member of the parliament regarding Serbia's accession to the European Union, that a referendum on this issue is still a long way off, but that the Government has made great efforts in the previous period to speed up Serbia's European path.

Macut emphasised that it is important to discuss Serbia's European future responsibly, considering all the circumstances of the country’s position. He pointed to different standards that exist in the process of accession of individual countries to the European Union.
The Prime Minister stated that Serbia has done a lot in the past year and a half to fulfil its obligations from the European integration process and the Reform Agenda, recalling that a meeting was held today with representatives of the relevant ministries dedicated to the implementation of the envisaged obligations.
He underlined that in the previous period, significant efforts were made by both the Government and the National Assembly in implementing reforms and fulfilling the steps envisaged by the Reform Agenda.
The Prime Minister emphasised that there are numerous reasons for continuing European integration and that the Government of Serbia is fully committed to accelerating this process, but he also pointed to political obstacles that have been slowing down Serbia's progress for years.
Macut recalled that Serbia has not made a step forward in opening Cluster 3 for a long time, despite the progress made and the fulfilment of numerous conditions, assessing that the continuation of the process requires more understanding and clearer support from the European Union.
The Prime Minister stated that Serbia remains committed to the European path, but that it will consistently take into account its state and national interests, Constitution and foreign policy commitments in the accession process.
Macut also pointed to the need for greater flexibility on the part of the European Union in resolving issues of importance to the Serbian economy, especially when it comes to the position of Serbian transporters, stressing that Serbia will continue talks with partners and EU member states on finding appropriate solutions.
He said that the Serbian government will continue to implement reforms and work to speed up the European integration process, while at the same time pursuing a responsible policy in the interest of the citizens of Serbia and preserving key state and national interests.
