Simon Davies and Bojan Dimitrijevic
Davies said following the signing of the memorandum that funds worth some €2 million are intended for consumer protection in Serbia, to be provided through an EU programme of financial assistance through the EAR.
According to Davies, this EU assistance, which will begin in February next year, will be used to strengthen legal frameworks, printing of educative material and initiating campaigns for raising public awareness.
The development of an all inclusive system of consumer protection is a key phase in Serbia’s process of European integration, said Davies.
Dimitrijevic said that the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Services will work on educating consumers, capacity building and formation of special departments dealing with consumer protection, as well as strengthening market inspection.
The Ministry alone, said Dimitrijevic, will invest €250,000 for these purposes.
The Minister voiced hope that by the end of this year the Serbian government will adopt a national programme for consumer protection for the period 2007 -2012.
