European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Training and Multilingualism Jan Figel said today that the European Union wants to support consolidation of the entire region when it comes to education and voiced conviction that Serbia can make up for lost time and join the European family.
Speaking at a press conference also attended by Serbian Minister of Education and Sport Slobodan Vuksanovic and occasioned by the international conference "The role of education in the European integration", Figel said that education is the key for social, economic and every other type of cohesion.
Recalling that Serbia is a member of the Bologna process, Figel voiced satisfaction with the fact that Serbia continues to modernise its schools and systems of education and training.
If Serbia wants to be competitive in the field of education, it has to invest in quality and create a policy and strategy of lifelong learning, Figel said.
Vuksanovic said that the Ministry of Education has shown that it can work in a modern and European way and that politics need not be a decisive factor.
