Borojevic said at a press conference, on the occasion of the 43rd Cancerology Week that the main subject of this international gathering is cancer of the thyroid gland. The event will last until October 28 in the Sava Centre.
According to Borojevic, a special session of cancer patients and oncology experts will be held at the conference, as well as a discussion on recommendations for protection of patient rights and controlling smoking in Serbia. He added that a national guide book for prevention of malignant diseases will also be presented.
Borojevic pointed to the fact that the number of patients who are in need of therapy is far greater than therapy equipment available, and recalled that the government set aside €9 million for equipping five centres for radiotherapy in Serbia in 2002.
Head of the Cancerology Section of the Serbian Medical Society Radan Dzodic warned that in the previous ten years the number of patients suffering from thyroid cancer has doubled, and the disease is appearing in more aggressive forms.
Dzodic said that it will be considered at the conference that two or three reference clinical centres are selected, to which all patients who are in need of procedures for removing thyroid tumours will be directed.
President of the board of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) for organising the conference Ivan Popov stressed that during the Cancerology Week, Belgrade will be honoured by being the first country in east Europe to host the autumn session of the EORTC working group for gastrointestinal malignancy.
