Kusturica to receive Order of Knight of Arts and Literature in France

Belgrade/Paris, 18 October 2006

French Minister of Culture Rennaud Donnadieu de Vabres stated tonight that Serbian film director Emir Kusturica will receive the French Order of the Knight of Arts and Literature.

In a statement to the Tanjug news agency following a meeting with Serbian Minister of Culture Dragan Kojadinovic, de Vabres confirmed he will personally deliver the Order to Kusturica.

The Order of the Knight of Arts and Literature, the highest French recognition for achievements in culture and film making, will be delivered to Kusturica as an acknowledgement of his professional achievements in France.

Kusturica's international success began in 1985 in France when he won the Golden Palm award at the Cannes film festival for his film "When Father Was Away on Business".

After that he also won awards at this festival for the film "Time of the Gipsies" (best director award in 1989) and "Underground" (Golden Palm award in 1995).
