Curricula at schools, faculties need to be modernised

Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, met today with the deans of faculties from the group of natural and mathematical sciences, the deans of faculties of pedagogical sciences and the directors of the Institute for the Improvement of Education and the Institute for Education Quality and Evaluation.

The interlocutors discussed curricula and programmes of teaching and learning, achievement standards and student workload, as well as ways to increase interest among prospective students in teaching professions.

Macut emphasised that it is necessary to modernise curricula and to include other relevant institutions and both institutes in this work, alongside the National Education Council, in order to reduce the volume of content and create space for improving teaching in natural sciences.

It was also said at the meeting that it is necessary to modernise curricula at faculties so that future students opt for teaching professions.

The Prime Minister pointed out that it is necessary to improve the teaching process in schools and provide solutions to the problem of shortages of teachers in certain subjects in primary and secondary schools.

The deans of the faculties of natural and mathematical sciences and the faculties of pedagogical sciences presented proposals on ways to harmonise the scope of content in schools and bring the teaching profession closer to future students.
