Speaking at a press conference held at the Serbian Ministry of Interior, Zobel said that the value of this donation is almost €150,000, with which the total amount of the German government's assistance for the reform of the Serbian police delivered from 2002 will reach €3 million.
He said that Germany will continue helping Serbia to establish a system of border control in line with EU standards and provisions of the Schengen agreement.
Serbian Minister of Interior Dragan Jocic thanked the Ambassador for the donation consisting of "Lada Niva" and "Zastava 10" vehicles and explained that the surveillance of state borders is an expensive and responsible task, for which Germany has already given assistance to Serbia last year in the amount of €80,000.
He recalled that Germany offered significant assistance in the equipping of the Interpol National Bureau in Belgrade, the Service for the Fight Against Organised Crime, the Belgrade Police Directorate, as well as providing expert assistance in mastering special investigative techniques.
Jocic underlined that in June 2005 the police took over from the army in securing Serbia's borders with Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, while the takeover of the Macedonian, Croatian and Bosnia-Herzegovinan borders should be completed by the end of this year. He said that the full demilitarisation of borders will be an important step on Serbia's road to the European Union.
