Serbia remains committed to remembrance culture, preserving truth, building peace

Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, stated today, on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Genocide Against Serbs, Jews and Roma in the Independent State of Croatia during the Second World War, that the strength of a nation lies in preserving the truth, but also in building a future in which such evil will never happen again.

“Today is a day of remembrance. With reverence, but also with an important lesson learned, we mark the Day of Remembrance for the innocent victims of genocide against Serbs, Jews and Roma in the Independent State of Croatia during the Second World War.

With deep sorrow, we also reflect on 81 years since the breakout of the last group of inmates from Jasenovac. Both of these occasions are a powerful warning that still resonates today and should continue to resonate in the future – so that it is never repeated.

The memory of their suffering obliges us to be worthy of their sacrifice. Not only through grief, but through responsibility.

At a place such as Jasenovac, we learn that remembrance is an act of respect, not revenge. I believe that the strength of a nation lies in preserving the truth, but also in building a future in which such evil will never happen again.
