At the commemorative academy on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of the Pogrom in Kosovo and Metohija in 2004, held at the National Theatre in Belgrade, Macut said that remembering 17 March is an obligation to all victims, people who were left homeless, as well as to future generations who deserve the truth about Serbian suffering and injustice.
We stand here today to encourage remembrance, not hatred. We are here to preserve the truth, to pass it on to future generations. It is the truth about suffering, injustice and sorrow that has never ceased, but with which we learn to live. It is the truth that no one can take away from Serbs and Serbia, the Prime Minister said.
He added that this truth teaches us not to repeat the same mistake, as well as to strengthen our state, people, and determination to make justice and respect for human rights the pillars of Serbia’s policies.
Macut stressed that on 17 March 2004, innocent Serbs suffered, as did others who only wanted a peaceful life, emphasizing that their houses were burned, sacred places damaged or destroyed, and families scattered from their homes.
According to him, thousands of people were expelled at that time, while most never returned to their loved ones, hearth, and homeland.
The obligation of Serbia and all of us who love Serbia is to advocate for the security of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, he said, adding that in the future the state will advocate for their dignity and right to live without fear, threats, violence and humiliation.
Also, as he pointed out, Serbia’s policy is not and will not be a policy of revenge, but a policy of justice based on understanding, striving for peace and dignity of the Serbian people in the southern province, saying that we will never give up on our people in Kosovo and Metohija.
Justice may be slow, but always achievable. May the victims never be forgotten. Let our word be that such evil will never be repeated and may our efforts for justice and peace be a beacon for our children and future generations, the Prime Minister concluded.
