NIS licence extension preserves Serbia’s energy stability

Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, today expressed his satisfaction with the decision of the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the United States Department of the Treasury (OFAC), which extended the licence for the operation of Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS) until 23 January.

Macut emphasized that the licence extension enables the continuation of the operation of NIS and the Pančevo Oil Refinery and is the result of intensive diplomatic activities and talks between President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić and officials in Washington, aimed at protecting the national interests of the Republic of Serbia in complex international circumstances.

The Prime Minister stressed that this is important and encouraging news for Serbia, and congratulated all citizens and employees of NIS for maintaining stability and responsibility in extremely difficult circumstances.

The decision to extend the licence confirms that persistent, responsible and statesmanlike policy pays off and that Serbia knows how to protect its national interests, he emphasised.

Macut recalled that 84 days have passed since the last entry of crude oil into the country, and that citizens and the economy have not experienced any disruptions in supply, which confirms the resilience of the system and the ability of the state to respond to major challenges.

He said that the government will continue to take all necessary measures to preserve energy security and overall economic stability of the Republic of Serbia.
