Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, stated tonight at a ceremony marking the 107th anniversary of the unification of Vojvodina with the Kingdom of Serbia, that the initiator of this event was the noble idea of the unity of the Serbs.
Macut underlined that today we celebrate the day when a centuries-old dream came true and when Srem, Bačka, Banat and Baranja became part of Serbia.
He pointed out that the foundations for the unification of Vojvodina with Serbia were gradually laid, based on the fact that Serbs have the right to their own language and religion.
The decision was made for the sake of freedom, peace and the future, which is the essence of today's celebration, said the Prime Minister, noting that this confirmation of unity bothered many, but that one small people showed that they can decide on their own destiny.
The Prime Minister pointed out that at that time there were ideologies that openly opposed Serbian unity, adding that such tendencies still exist today and that even today we see that many want to destabilise us and trample on our values.
Macut said that the unification of Vojvodina with Serbia should be a moral guideline for current and future generations.
