Simic said at a press conference that the Ministry of Health gladly accepted to be the sponsor of this humane campaign which is very important because the possibilities for curing breast cancer are much greater if it is detected on time.
According to Simic, this disease which is the fourth most common female disease in Serbia after stroke, ischemic heart disease and depression, makes up for 26% of newly-registered cases of cancer among women, of which more than two-thirds are discovered in an advanced stage.
Every year, more than 4000 women are detected with breast cancer in Serbia, she specified and warned that the number of new cases is increasing.
Simic said that in the first stage of the campaign, the emphasis will be on the promotion of self-examination of breasts, as a method that enables women to detect the disease in an early stage, and on raising awareness of the disease.
Director of the Serbian Institute for Oncology and Radiology Nenad Borojevic stressed that the institute will support the campaign because it can assist Serbia, like most developed countries, in gaining a programme of preventive health education of women and the necessary medical equipment.
President of the humanitarian fund which will carry out the campaign, model Katarina Rebraca said that as part of this campaign, a women's race will be organised on Ada Ciganlija on September 23, a big humanitarian ball in the hotel Hyatt on October 27 and a fashion show in the Plaza hotel on December 1, in order to raise funds for equipment of the centre.
