Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, met today, during the last day of his working visit to Shanghai, with representatives of Chinese companies BGI Group, Sinopharm and Huawei.
Addressing journalists in Shanghai, Macut stressed that these companies are interested in improving cooperation with Serbia, especially in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, high technologies, communications and economy.
He specified that BGI Group is engaged in research and diagnostics in the field of clinical genetics, Sinopharm is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in China, with which Serbia already has long-standing ties, while Huawei has been present in the field of the IT sector and electronics in our country for many years, decades even.
According to him, the discussions focused on the current cooperation, but also on its advancement, primarily in the areas they cover, such as medicine, pharmacy, artificial intelligence, telecommunications, but also on genetic research in the field of agriculture, the development of new varieties and various seeds.
The Prime Minister added that BGI is interested in marketing its new technologies in the field of developmental medicine, applied medicine and applied clinical medicine.
This is something that has already characterised their presence in Serbia since the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the Fire Eye laboratories were opened in Serbia. Sequencing the genome of the virus was then of exceptional importance in confirmation and diagnosis, as well as in monitoring virus mutations for better therapy efficiency, the Prime Minister reminded.
He pointed out that these technologies can now be applied both in the field of diagnostics and in monitoring other health problems in patients who have survived COVID-19 infection and who later had certain complications.
According to him, cooperation with this company should grow to a level that will improve bioinformatics, that is, the analysis of data that we already obtain in Serbia with the help of their technological solutions in the field of new genetic capabilities and capacities, to the point of usability in areas such as oncology or general clinical medicine.
Macut explained that he discussed with representatives of Sinopharm how to improve cooperation, primarily the therapeutic lines they have in China.
The Prime Minister discussed with representatives of Huawei the possibility of further structuring its business in our country, that is, producing chips and other electronic components in Serbia, up to the development of solutions in the field of artificial intelligence.
At the same time, he pointed out that during his first official visit to Shanghai, he had a number of important meetings with officials, which showed that the People’s Republic of China cultivates friendly relations with Serbia.
Macut noted that good and stable bilateral relations are the key to establishing good economic relations and reminded that China is the first in terms of the number of investments in Serbia.
He emphasised that it is very important that Serbia is represented every year at the China International Import Expo in Shanghai, which allows countries to present themselves on that market, but also to connect with many other global companies.
The Prime Minister also stressed that Serbia has shown during this official visit that it is a friendly country and ready to cooperate with partners around the world.
