Speaking at a press conference held regarding the initiation of a public awareness campaign related to the system of marking and registration of cattle, Zivkov recalled that the process of registering cows began in September last year and that up to now 97% of cattle and 180,000 farms have been registered in the central database.
Director of the Veterinary Directorate Dejan Krnjajic said that the process of marking pigs and dogs is ongoing, and added that at the end of this month sheep and goats will be tagged.
According to Krnjajic, owners of marked animals are obliged to report newly-born cattle to veterinary stations, the departure and arrival of cattle from the farm, as well as their death and loss of identity tags which are attached to the ears of the animal.
Head of the European Commission's delegation to Belgrade Josep Lloveras stressed that consistent implementation of regulations on marking cattle is not just part of preparations for Serbia’s integration into the EU, but also an opportunity for developing agriculture and safety in food production in Serbia.
