Speaking at a press conference held following the adoption of a sectoral plan in the area of tourism, Senic said that a sum of €19 million will be invested in tourism by the end of the year, while in 2007 investments will be worth €31 million.
He said that the funds are intended for investments in developing the potential of the Danube River, construction of infrastructure in centers of tourism, increasing competition in tourism related products, market positioning of Serbian tourism abroad and the construction of a cableway with gondolas between New Belgrade and Ada Ciganlija.
According to Senic, funds have been distributed in agreement with other ministries, on the basis of projects by local self-governments and the Tourism Development Strategy until 2015, and the aim of investments is to motivate private capital to invest in accommodation facilities for tourists which are insufficient at the moment.
Investments worth €8.3 million will be made in several projects connected to the potential of the Danube, and mostly in the construction of passenger ports in Belgrade, Vinca, Novi Sad, Apatin and Lepenski Vir, and reconstruction of the Belgrade quay, the ethnic-park in Glozan and renovation of the lake reserve of Srebrna is also envisaged, said Senic.
He pointed out that tourism cannot be developed equally in Serbia and because of that several centers for tourism have been selected where infrastructure will be developed through 33 projects worth €20.5 million, to initiate progress in the sector of tourism in the country.
Senic said that €16.2 million will be invested for promoting competitiveness of tourist products whereas €3.5 million will be spent for promotion of Serbian tourism abroad.
The Serbian tourism industry generated a surplus of $14 million in the first half of the year, Senic said and added that tourism is currently one of the rare economic branches that does achieve a deficit in foreign exchange commerce.
Serbian Minister of Finance Mladjan Dinkic said that the government plans to invest in tourism and motivate private entrepreneurs to invest in accommodation facilities in a move to upgrade Serbia’s tourism.
He also said that Austrian Doppelmayr will install the first cableway on Mt. Stara Planina in August. Dinkic announced that another two cableways will be installed on Mt. Kopaonik.
According to him, the master plan envisions the installation of ski pass on Divcibare and Golija as well as smaller ski lifts on Zlatibor and Rudnik.
