Strengthening police cooperation with Austria to preserve regional security

Belgrade/Vienna, 24 July 2025

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić met with Federal Minister of the Interior of Austria Gerhard Karner in Vienna today to discuss the continuation of joint efforts by Serbian and Austrian police in combating organised crime and terrorism.

During the meeting, which also addressed cooperation in countering irregular migration and human smuggling, the officials emphasised that police cooperation between Serbia and Austria is highly intensive and must be further strengthened in order to respond more effectively to all threats.

Dačić praised the efforts made thus far by the two countries in efficiently protecting the national border, which has helped reduce the number of irregular migrant crossings into Western European countries, noting that Serbia will remain an important and reliable partner of the EU in implementing these measures.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of the Serbia-Austria-Hungary border management initiative and the deployment of Austrian and Hungarian police officers to the border with North Macedonia, where they are assisting their Serbian counterparts in border control, as well as cooperation through Frontex in the joint fight against cross-border crime and irregular migration.

Dačić and Karner agreed that it is essential to continue the dedicated fight against organised criminal groups operating along migrant routes.
