Serbia committed to UNESCO principles, priorities

Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, spoke today with candidate of the Arab Republic of Egypt for the position of Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Khaled El-Enany whose candidacy for this position Serbia officially supported.

The Prime Minister emphasised that Serbia is committed to the principles and priorities of UNESCO, to the achievement of common goals and initiatives within the UN, and that Serbia is actively working on the implementation of UNESCO conventions in the field of culture.

He emphasised that Serbia supports global priorities and programme activities in the areas under UNESCO’s competence – education, science, culture, information and communication, which are also related to topics on the UN agenda, such as the implementation of the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development by 2030.

Macut briefed El-Enany on the challenges and dangers facing the Serbian people, as well as the Serbian cultural and religious heritage in Kosovo and Metohija, which is continuously exposed to destruction, desecration and falsification.

El-Enany said his vision is based on bringing UNESCO closer to people’s needs and being more effective in addressing challenges such as poverty, digital transition and climate change.
