Following a meeting with EU Commissioner for Science and Research Janez Potocnik, Popovic said that if all expectations are realised, it will be proved that science is the strongest area in Serbian society and will be one of the first segments capable of full EU integration.
He said that there is a real possibility that from October 2007 EU member countries will accept the directive of the EU according to which the visa regime for scientists can be relaxed.
According to Popovic, Serbia has got five out of the 14 science projects envisaged for countries of the West Balkans in the upcoming year.
Potocnik pointed out that cooperation between Serbia and the EU is continuing, which is also reflected by his visit, and added that knowledge is becoming the most important political factor in Europe.
Time is required to become part of the Seventh Framework Programme. That is why it is important to begin cooperation as soon as possible. I want to encourage Serbia to move in the direction of an associate member of this programme, said Potocnik.
He said that it is necessary that domestic policy supports such a determination, and encouraged the Serbian government to use the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) funds to strengthen the science sector.
He added that he was impressed by his visit to the Mihajlo Pupin Institute, Institute of Physics, and the Nikola Tesla Museum.
