Director of the Centre Milomir Perovic said at a press conference that the carnival in Vrnjacka Banja is the most important manifestation in Serbia after Exit and the trumpet festival in Guca.
Carnival manager Goran Atanaskovic said that some 80 carnival groups will participate in the event, including groups from Italy, Turkey, Ecuador, Indonesia, Cuba and Slovenia.
He said that 65 different cultural programmes are planned for this year, including theatre performances, concerts, masquerades and carnival processions. It is estimated that 200,000 people will visit the festival over the seven days.
The carnival, which will last until July 16, was opened with an entertainment performance staged by actors, musicians, jugglers, clowns and majorettes.
Last night's programme included a concert of Cuban band San Cuba San and a theatre play "Musica". A party on the Bridge of Love (Most ljubavi) continued until dawn.
