Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, met today in Cairo with the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St Mark, Tawadros II.
Macut expressed his respect for the rich history and spiritual significance of the Coptic Orthodox Church and underlined that Serbia remains firmly committed to nurturing the centuries-old friendly ties between Serbia and Egypt, as well as to upholding religious freedoms and interfaith dialogue.
The Prime Minister stated that Serbia follows with great interest the Coptic Church’s efforts to preserve ancient monasteries, churches and manuscripts that testify to the richness of early Christianity. He also noted that Serbia takes great pride in its own monasteries and churches – treasures of spirituality and art – which it safeguards as the most valuable part of the Serbian people’s heritage.
The interlocutors agreed that in the face of today’s global challenges, culture and religion play a key role in promoting peace, understanding and tolerance among nations.
The head of the Coptic Orthodox Church emphasised that the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Coptic Orthodox Church maintain friendly relations, based on mutual respect and shared Christian values.
