Ministers of Culture of countries of south east Europe, functionaries from the Council of Europe and the European Commission met today in Varna, Bulgaria, on the occasion of the second meeting of the Council of Ministers of Culture of South East Europe at which regional initiatives in the area of cultural heritage will be examined.
A statement by the Ministry of Culture says that participants of the gathering, which will last until June 25, welcomed the intensification of regional dialogue in south east Europe and expressed their satisfaction with the development of constructive cooperation and solid partnership in the area of culture.
Participants of the forum reached agreement that cultural variety represents the determining factor for the region and Europe. They expressed their willingness to improve intercultural dialogue and increase mutual awareness of the culture and history of the nations of south east Europe.
After the declaration “Communication of Heritage”, which was adopted by heads of state on June 1, 2006 in Opatija, participants adopted a Strategy to identify, preserve, viably use and promote cultural corridors in South East Europe, and reached agreement on an action plan connected to the strategy.
Officials of the Council of Europe and the European Union presented a joint initiative by these two organisations – “Regional programme for cultural and natural heritage in south east Europe,” and the forum confirmed its readiness to integrate and use the regional programme as the main instrument for regional cooperation.
Participants of the gathering also adopted a Decision on institutionalising the Action Plan on cultural cooperation in south east Europe, as the working instrument which will promote creativity and interethnic widening of culture, mobility of artists and circulation of artistic and cultural works and products.
