Velimir Ilic
At a press conference in the Serbian government, Ilic said that first suspicions of the theft arose while concession analyses for the Nis-Dimitrovgrad road were conducted. It turned out that the number of foreign vehicles coming in and out of the country did not match, he said.
Ilic pointed out that no one involved in the fraud will be spared, adding that once the interior ministry issues an official report early next week, many things will come to light. He also added that the suspects that have been detained were hired in the period between 1987 and 1999 and that their scheming has been going on for 15 years.
Ilic explained that in order to get material evidence of the fraud, an investigation that took six months was conducted in secret by the Ministries of Interior and Capital Investment and the Security and Intelligence Agency (BIA).
"The perpetrators of this crime were not only people employed at the pay-tolls, but they also include an expert team of outsiders", said Ilic and recalled that according to estimates, the suspects have defrauded the state of several billion dinars.
