Cannes film festival opened

The 59th film festival in Cannes was opened last night with the premier of "The Da Vinci Code", directed by Ron Howard.
Before the screening of the movie, the ceremony's host, French actor Vincent Cassel held a speech on the topic of multicultural society and pointed out that for him the Cannes film festival is a celebration of differences.
After that, famous American actor and Oscar winner Sidney Poitier formally opened one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world.
Twenty films are competing this year for the Golden Palm. However, in this year's official selection there is a small number of famous filmmakers, especially when compared to the last year, as well as an almost complete absence of films from Asia, except for the "Summer Palace" by the Chinese Lou Ye.
The jury that is to choose the winner and which is chaired by Chinese director Wong Kar Wai, maker of the "In the Mood for Love", includes famous Italian actress Monica Bellucci, American actor Samuel L. Jackson and Argentinean director Lucrecia Martel.
